Dr. James Ahlgren
About Dr. James Ahlgren

Dr. Ahlgren is a medical oncologist with The GW Medical Faculty Associates and he specializes in gastrointestinal, pancreatic, and hepatobiliary cancer.  He is professor of medicine and professor of pharmacology and physiology at GWU and has been on the GWU faculty for over 20 years.  He is former chairman of the Mid-Atlantic Oncology Program, an NCI-sponsored consortium of university and private oncology practices which carried out cooperative clinical research in cancer treatment.  He is co-author of the textbook Gastrointestinal Oncology (McGraw-Hill) and has over 50 published papers on gastrointestinal oncology.  He is the recipient of several awards in medicine and cancer research.


Dr. Ahlgren received his undergraduate degree from MIT and practiced engineering almost 20 years before beginning his medical education.  He left the presidency of Telcom, Inc, a local telecommunications engineering and consulting firm, to enter medical school in 1973.  He received the MD degree from Georgetown Universityand completed his residency and fellowship in medical oncology there.  He is board-certified in internal medicine and medical oncology.  He was formerly a faculty member at Georgetown before joining GWU in 1988.


In collaboration with Dr. Michel Caudry, Dr. Ahlgren organized (in 1993) the International Conference on Gastrointestinal Oncology, an annual congress which continues to present new research findings at meetings which alternate between the US and France.  Dr. Ahlgren’s research interests are in gastrointestinal oncology, neuroendocrine tumors, and the molecular mechanisms of anticancer drugs.


Congratulations to Dr. Ahlgren who was named to the US News & World Report ‘Top Doctors’ list and in Castle Connolly's estimation, is among the top 1% in the nation in cancer and blood disorders!
