Botox is the brand name for botulinum toxin, a byproduct of certain bacteria that causes temporary weakening of muscles. Botulinum toxin has been used in the past and is currently used for many different medical treatments including neuromuscular disorders. More recently, botulinum toxin has been used to soften the look of wrinkles by weaken the tiny muscles of the face. Botox is administered by dermatologists certified in the administration of Botox. The most effective places to use Botox include wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyes or eyebrows, crow’s feet at the corner of the eyes, and cords in the neck called platsymal bands. Not all wrinkles can be treated with Botox treatment, including those that are deep or caused by sun damage to the skin over time. Botox does wear off over time, so injections do need to be repeated to maintain softened wrinkles. Risks of Botox injections are generally temporary and include droopy eyelids, frozen facial expression and slight redness of the injection site. You should discuss your problem wrinkle areas with your doctor or dermatologist to see if Botox is right for you.
