Epiphora
DEFINITION
Epiphora is the medical name for excessive tearing of the eye. Several minimally invasive endoscopic procedures offered for eye related diseases of the nose and sinuses. Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) doctors can help these tears drain in a more comfortable fashion through minimally invasive procedures.
SYMPTOMS
Excessive tearing of the eye
DIAGNOSIS
Your doctor will first take a history and perform a physical exam, especially focused on the eye and vision. Your doctor may want to take pictures of the orbit with either a CT scan or MRI to determine the cause of your symptoms.
TREATMENT
Some medications may be available to decrease the amount of tears. Definitive treatment can be offered by an ENT doctor. Endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) allows the surgeons to improve the normal tearing of the eye by opening the lacrimal sac (where tears are stored) into the nose which allows the tears to drain in a more comfortable fashion.
