Tinnitus

SYMPTOMS
Ringing in the ears, buzzing in the ears, clicking in the ears, hissing in the ear

DIAGNOSIS
Diagnosis of tinnitus is based on your description of your symptoms. Your doctor will then do a physical examination to look in the ears for waxy buildup or other abnormalities, listen for any sounds of tinnitus he or she may hear, and do a nerve and blood flow exam of the head and neck. After this initial testing, you will likely see an audiologist who can test the range of your hearing and any abnormalities in your hearing. Your doctor may recommend a CT scan or MRI scan of the head to look for abnormal growths in the head. Your doctor may refer you to an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) doctor for further diagnosis.

TREATMENT
Treatment of tinnitus begins with treating any underlying conditions that may be causing the ringing, like cleaning out the ears, fixing any problems with blood flow including using medication for high blood pressure, and changing any medications which may be contributing to the ringing in your ears. All of these treatments should be done by a doctor. To reduce the affect that tinnitus has on your life, you may choose symptomatic relief with white noise machines, hearing aids, or even hearing aid type devices that produce white noise. Medications that can be used to treat the symptoms of tinnitus include tricyclic antidepressants (amitriptylene or nortriptylene), alprazolam (Xanax), and a medication used for alcohol addiction called acamprosate (Campral). To reduce symptoms and increase the quality of your life you may try the following: managing your stress level, avoiding loud noise or other noises that exacerbate your symptoms, decreasing alcohol intake. Alternative medicine suggests the use of acupuncture, hypnosis, zinc supplements, and gingko though none of these have been proven to work.
