Bariatric Surgery is a type of surgery done for weight loss in extremely obese people. Generally this surgery is done by modifying the normal size or pathway of the digestive system, especially the stomach. In the normal digestive system, the food goes into the stomach where it begins being digested, then passes to the small intestine (where nutrients are absorbed) then proceeds to the large intestine (where water is absorbed) then the waste products subsequently pass out of the bottom as stool. The Very Very long limb gastric Bypass is a modification of the classic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass. This procedure is often recommended for women who weigh more than 350 pounds and men who weigh more than 400 pounds. The Very Very Long Limb Gastric Bypass has two effects to decrease weight: it both decreases the size of the stomach so that the person eats less and bypasses the stomach and the beginning of the small intestine. This surgery is generally done laproscopically (with small incisions and a small camera and small surgical tools inserted into the belly to perform the surgery) rather than an open or traditional surgery. The surgery itself involves decreasing the size of the stomach and reattaching the new smaller pouch to a spot further down the small intestine. The remaining intestine which drains gastric juices from the stomach is attached further down the digestive tract than in a classic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass. With this modification, even less food is absorbed in the body. Sometimes your surgeon may recommend removing the gallbladder at the same time during surgery as overweight people have many more problems with gallstones. You should discuss the various types of weight loss options with your primary care physician and surgeon to find the best option for you.
