Jason Engel, MD

Jason Douglas Engel, M.D.

Jason Douglas Engel, MD is the founder of the urologic robotic surgery program at the George Washington University Hospital, a program that has become the regional leader in this type of surgery. He is the Vice Chairman of Urology and Director of Urologic Robotic Surgery at GW, with a fully developed robotics program that now performs approximately 5-7 prostatectomies per week along with other reconstructive surgeries on the kidney that are aided with robotics.

Along with a major interest in robotic prostatectomy and pyeloplasty, Dr. Engel specializes as well in performing major oncologic procedures such as open and laparoscopic kidney surgery, open and robotic bladder surgery as well as complex urologic reconstruction. Such reconstructive procedures include bladder reconstruction, surgery for urethral strictures (urethroplasty) and all forms of surgery for Peyronie's disease. Lastly, Dr. Engel is heavily involved in the minimally invasive treatment of BPH, or enlarged prostate. He is on the advisory panel for Medtronic, the makers of the TUNA/Prostiva device. This has led him to be one of the most experienced urologists in the area from both a clinical and research perspective on thermotherapy for BPH.

Dr. Engel, who practices with Urologic Surgeons of Washington, is currently involved with several clinical research projects with special focus on research that aims to shorten the time to return of erections after robotic prostatectomy, as well as research on minimally invasive treatment of BPH. Several manuscripts are in preparation or have been submitted, and past research has been published in Urology Pearls, Urology, Urologic Clinics of North America, Journal of Urology, International Journal of Cancer, Journal of Biological Chemistry and the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Engel is the author of three chapters in the first Atlas of Robotic Surgery, to be published in late 2006. Dr. Engel is also a part of the kidney transplant team at Howard University Hospital.

Dr. Engel received his undergraduate degree with distinction from the University of Virginia, and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. His post-graduate training was done at Northwestern University where he had residencies in general surgery and urology. He served as a research fellow at the NIH National Cancer Institute, Laboratory of Pathology, Tumor Invasion and Metastasis Section. He is board certified with the American Board of Urology. His professional memberships include the Society for Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and the American Urological Association.

Dr. Engel has recently been interviewed by FOX News, ABC News, WUSA-TV9, the Washington Times, Washington Business Journal, and PBS.
