| Program on Cognitive Behavioral Therapies |
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a contemporary form of psychotherapy or talk therapy that actively engages the patient in a structured format designed to rapidly attain change and alleviate emotional and mental distress. It is a skills-based therapy in which one of the prime goals is to teach the patient effective strategies that he/she can use even after therapy has ended. Initially theorized and practiced by Dr. Aaron Beck, it has a significant degree of scientific evidence for its efficacy. It is now used in many disorders:
1. Depression and anxiety including obsessive-compulsive disorder and panic disorder
2. Eating disorders and problems with being overweight
3. Marital and couples problems
4. As an adjunct to such psychosomatic problems as migraine, inflammatory bowel disease and chronic pain syndromes
5. Certain forms of psychotic disorders
The director of this program is Dr. Anton Trinidad. He trained under the supervision of Dr. Aaron Beck at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a founding fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy (academyofct.org) and has actively taught other psychiatrists and therapists and practiced CBT for 15 years.
