Elevated FSH
Follicle Stimulating Hormone, or FSH, is a hormone which stimulates the follicles (or sacs within your ovaries which contain eggs) to grow and to produce healthy, mature eggs.
FSH is produced by the pituitary gland at the base of brain and travels to ovaries during the monthly menstrual cycle. FSH causes the ovaries to produce the hormone estrogren.
As women age, they experience a decline in the numbers of follicles capable of producing eggs. The pituitary gland tries to compensate by increasing its production of FSH. Sometimes, this condition occurs in younger women and indicates a compromised ability to get pregnant.
If a woman is diagnosed with elevated FSH, it is important that she seek expert guidance promptly to help her understand her options and maximize the chances for pregnancy using her own eggs.
Our expert physicians at the Fertility & IVF Center at The GW Medical Faculty Associates specialize in the evaluation and treatment of women with Elevated FSH. They have performed research, published their findings and successfully treated patients with the problem for years. They work with each patient to promptly explore options which may allow a woman to use her own eggs or to guide her through the process of fertility interventions using donor eggs.
