Biography

Dr. James Earls is a Professor of Radiology and Vice-Chairman of Radiology at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC. Dr. Earls received his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts and M.D. from the New York University School of Medicine. He completed internship in general surgery and residency in diagnostic radiology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and fellowship in Body and Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging at NYU School of Medicine. He served as Director of Body Imaging at Harborview Hospital of University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle then Director of Body Magnetic Resonance Imaging at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

He later joined Fairfax Radiological Consultants in Fairfax, VA and as Medical Director and Vice President he helped grow it into third largest radiology practice in the U.S. At FRC Dr. Earls was an early innovator and clinical adopter of cardiac CT angiography. His seminal work proving the effectiveness of prospective ecg-gating to lower radiation dose is now used as the standard imaging technique world-wide.

He has served as a member of the Board of Directors for the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, the North American Society of Cardiac Imaging, and the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography. He is the author of over 100 articles, book chapters, abstracts and other publications on advanced imaging technologies. Dr. Earls is a founding member and was made one of the first Fellows of the Society of Cardiovascular CT. He is the former Editor of the MR Pulse and is currently the Associate Editor of the Journal of Cardiovascular CT.

His research interests include new technologies and methods for improving accuracy, minimizing radiation dose, and for improving characterization of atherosclerotic coronary artery plaques with cardiac CT. He lectures extensively on advanced cardiovascular imaging techniques and has been Course Director for both national and international cardiovascular imaging meetings.
