The GW Medical Faculty Associates has a rich heritage in academics and research as the first medical school in the nation’s capital and the 11th oldest in the United States. Our physicians teach and mentor medical students, residents and researchers at The GW University School of Medicine & Health Sciences.
Opened in 1825 as Columbian College, the institution became George Washington University Medical School in 1904. In 1928, the Department of Medicine grew and became the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, and University Hospital. Twenty years later, GW Hospital opened its doors and shortly after, The Medical Faculty Associates opened its first ambulatory care center in the H.B. Burns building called “The George Washington University Clinic.”
In the mid 1990s, The GW University board restructured, selling the hospital in 1997 and divesting The MFA in 2000 when it was incorporated as an independent 501(C) 3 non-profit medical group.
To date, The GW Medical Faculty Associates employs over 2,150 employees located in the US and across the world from as far away as Qatar.
While the organization strives to maintain our reputation for clinical excellence and quality care to set us apart in the eyes of patients, we recognize that for many patients, the deciding factors in healthcare selection are influenced by other intangibles that are part of the patient experience. Timely appointment access, outstanding front desk service, and prompt follow through and coordinated care with referring physicians is our goal.
The GW Medical Faculty Associates goals include improving the patient experience through better access, quality, and coordination of care. To achieve these goals, the organization will leverage the latest technologies for delivering a state-of-the-art experience and will engage in partnerships that offer best practice learning and tools to empower employees to deliver an exceptional experience.
