Professor of Medicine and of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Dominic Raj, MD, DM, FASN, is the Director of the Division of Renal Diseases and Hypertension. He is a professor of Medicine, a professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology & Genetics and a professor of Biostatistics and Epidemiology.
He received his undergraduate and M.D. in Medicine from the Madurai Medical College Madurai, India and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Louisiana State Medical University and Fellowship in Nephrology at the University of Toronto.
His clinical interests are diverse with specific emphasis on management of hypertension, preventing the progression of kidney disease, diabetic nephropathy, polycystic kidney disease, age related decline in kidney function, home dialysis therapies, nocturnal hemodialysis, and continuous renal replacement therapies.
Dr. Raj is a clinical translational researcher. He is published in several journals. He serves as grant reviewer for the National Institute of Health and Wellcome Trust Foundation. His research interests include cardiovascular disease in patients with chronic kidney disease, optimal blood pressure target for protection of kidney disease and cardiovascular disease, inflammation in chronic kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease, and mechanism of muscle wasting in renal disease. His research is supported by various non-profit organizations as well as the National Institute of Diabetes and Kidney Disease and the National Institute of Heart, Blood, Lung Institute.
Dr. Raj is the Principal investigator for the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC) study ancillary project that explores the genetic basis for progression of renal and cardiovascular diseases. He is also the principal investigator for the Systolic Blood Pressure Interventional Trial (SPRINT) at the George Washington University site.
In addition, he works with industries to improve health care delivery and bringing new and emerging therapies to the patients.
