Samir S. Patel, MD, is an associate professor of Medicine at The GWU School of Medicine and Health Sciences in the Division of Renal Diseases and Hypertension. He is the Director of the Nephrology Fellowship Program and Director of Therapeutic Plasmaphereis.
Dr. Patel received his B.A. from Northwestern University and his M.D. from the Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. He completed his graduate medical education in both Internal Medicine and Nephrology at GWU.
Dr. Patel's clinical activities range from care of hospitalized and critically ill patients with kidney failure, to ambulatory patients with chronic kidney disease, to patients with end-stage kidney disease treated with dialysis. He has specific interest in the management of hypertension, hypertensive renal disease, chronic kidney disease, infection related kidney diseases, glomerular diseases, continuous renal replacement therapies, and therapeutic plasmapheresis.
Dr. Patel's research interests include hypertension management and adherence to treatment using telemedicine, psychosocial issues including depression, sleep disorders and pain perception in patients with end-stage renal disease treated with hemodialysis, and he has a special interest in ethical aspects of renal replacement therapy and authored a book chapter on social, ethical and legal issues in patients treated with dialysis.
