Dr. William Madigan
About Dr. William Madigan

William P. Madigan Jr M.D., FACS is the Vice-Chief of the Division of Ophthalmology at Children's National Medical Center (CNMC) and the professor and Chief of the Division of Ophthalmology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) School of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point and his Medical Doctor degree from USUHS. He completed his fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology under Dr. Marshall Parks at CNMC in 1989.


Dr. Madigan joined the staff at CNMC in 2004 after a distinguished career in the US Army. He retired as Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) and Consultant to the Surgeon General for Ophthalmology. As Consultant he developed and implemented a worldwide system of laser refractive centers for the Warfighter Refractive Surgery Program. This multimillion dollar program was conceived by Dr. Madigan and has resulted in the treatment of over one hundred thousand soldiers thereby contributing to both their military readiness and their personal safety. While serving at WRAMC for the previous fifteen years he was also the Director of Pediatric Ophthalmology and the senior military pediatric specialist in Ophthalmology . While providing care to the 450,000 beneficiaries in the Washington, D.C. area he also received referrals of the most complex patients who were air-evacuated from throughout the world to WRAMC to benefit from his expertise. He is a recognized expert in his field whose experience spans the entire spectrum of eye care for children and for adults with strabismus. He cares for those with glaucoma, cataracts, ptosis, strabismus, ocular tumors, and other complex diseases.


Dr. Madigan is the Director of Pediatric Ophthalmology for the Washington Hospital Center/Georgetown University Residency Program and is the Coordinator for Pediatric Ophthalmology for the Washington Ophthalmology Residency Consortium, which develops educational programs for all residency-training programs in the Washington, D.C. area. He is active in research and in several professional organizations. He serves on several important professional committees and has published his research extensively in journals and book chapters. He is a member of the Medical Executive Committee a Children's National Medical Center and serves on the Board of Directors for both the Children's National Health Network and the Friends of USUHS organization. He is the elected President of the USUHS Alumni Association. He is a member of the Medical Honor Society, Alpha Omega Alpha, and has been recognized as one of America's Top Ophthalmologists. He serves as the Program Director for the Washington Academy of Ophthalmology.


Dr. Madigan is available to see patients at CNMC, and its regional clinics in Fairfax, Laurel and adult strabismus patients at the George Washington University Hospital.
