Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery
Robert J. Neviaser, M.D. is the professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at The GWU School of Medicine and Health Sciences and Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the GW Medical Faculty Associates. After receiving his M.D. from the Jefferson Medical College, he completed his Orthopaedic Surgery training at the New York Orthopaedic Hospital of the Columbia Unviversity-Presbyterian Medical Center as well as a fellowship in Surgery of the Hand at the Orthopaedic Hospital of Los Angeles. He is board-certified in Orthopaedic and Hand Surgery.
He has received teaching awards and of the Distinguished Alumnus Award of the New York Orthopaedic Hospital in 2009. He is recognized in Best Doctors in America for surgery of the shoulder and of the hand, as well as, Washingtonian magazine best doctors.
Dr. Neviaser is a founding member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons and has served as its President. He has also been President of the Western Trauma Association. He has more than 120 publications on disorders of the shoulder and of the hand, has been invited as the Visiting Professor or Presidential Guest Speaker at over 60 institutions and organizations world-wide from North America to Europe to Asia to South America to Africa, and was the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery from 1996-2008, currently serving as Editor Emeritus of that Journal.
He is a pioneer in treatment of problems about the shouler, including those of the rotator cuff, shoulder joint replacement (including the reverse shoulder) for arthritis and fractures, instability and dislocations, and fractures about the shoulder. He has made major contributions to the treatment of hand problems as well, tendon disorders, nerve injuries, fractures and dislocations, and arthritis.
