Dr. Akman is a graduate of Duke University and The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. He completed his residency in psychiatry at The George Washington University Medical Center and joined the psychiatry faculty in 1985. Prior to his appointment as Interim Vice Provost for Health Affairs and Dean of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences he served as the Leon M. Yochelson professor and chair of the Department of Psychiatry (2000-2010). Dr. Akman has a long history of community service and has served on numerous nonprofit boards of directors including Whitman-Walker Clinic and Food & Friends.
Dr. Akman is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a member of the prestigious American College of Psychiatrists. He has received multiple awards related to teaching, community service and humanism in medicine and is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He has been multiply recognized as one of the "Top Doctors" and "Top Mental Health Professionals" in Washingtonian magazine and was named one of "America's Top Psychiatrists" by the Consumer Research Council of America.
