Of the many sleep facilities in the Washington Metropolitan area, none has the experience and expertise of GW's Sleep Center. The Center's multidisciplinary staff has been treating the spectrum of sleep disorders; including all types of insomnia and parasomnia, snoring, narcolepsy, and sleep apnea for many years. The Center's director, Samual Potolicchio, MD, is a pioneer in the field, having established the first comprehensive sleep program in the area.
The neurologists, pulmonary specialists, otolaryngologists, psychiatrists and other medical professionals at the Sleep Center pool their talents to ensure that patients receive accurate diagnoses the first time. Moreover, the staff understands that elaborate testing does not make a good sleep center; expertise does. Their concentrated diagnostic approach means that patients undergo only the tests necessary to access their conditions. Often, patients can be evaluated without the use of expensive testing.
The Center's laboratory, unique in this region, houses special monitoring equipment that enables physicians to thoroughly evaluate the full range of sleep disorders. Patients can receive at-home monitoring via a portable sleep system if they prefer; an option that provides an accurate diagnosis while minimizing disruption to the patient's life. Other alternatives include the Center's "split night" testing, 24 hour monitoring, and polysomnography.
After a patient's disorder has been clearly defined, staff physicians work with that individual to determine the best therapeutic regime. Although otolaryngological surgery is the therapy of choice for some patients with sleep apnea and snoring, medical therapy is the first line of treatment for a majority of the Center's clients.
