In the last few years, the use of laser has become an accepted alternative to surgical stripping to treat varicose veins. In endovenous laser therapy, a thick laser fiber is inserted into the diseased vein, generally through a small puncture in the leg above the knee or where the visual symptoms appear. The physician then delivers laser energy through the fiber that causes the vein to close as the fiber is gradually removed. During the procedure, the patient is awake and the leg is anesthetized.  The laser therapy treats the source of the problem that then causes the varicose veins in the lower leg to shrink and disappear. Endovenous laser therapy is performed in a physician's office in less than one hour, and the patient is encouraged to walk immediately following the procedure.

Endovenous laser therapy has rarely been associated with any serious complications. Common minor complications of these procedures include bruising, mild itching, tingling, tenderness, and tightness in the treated leg for up to two weeks after the therapy.

Injection Sclerotherapy is used for spider veins and small isolated or recurrent veins below the knee level. This modality will also be available at the vein center and will be performed on an outpatient basis.

Phlebectomy is the surgical removal of small varicose veins not suitable for laser therapy or sclerotherapy. This can be performed under local anesthesia through tiny stab incisions in the skin that do not require suturing. The skin incisions are closed with steristrips. Once completely healed the scars are barely visible.

Under the leadership of Subodh Arora, MD, noted vascular surgeon, this new Center will feature comprehensive treatment of varicose veins, which will include, Endovascular Laser Therapy, Injection Sclerotherapy and Phlebectomy. This advanced offering allows varicose veins to be successfully treated in an outpatient environment with minimal discomfort allowing the patient to return to normal activities the same day as the procedure.
