According to the Centers for Disease Control, women in the Washington, D.C. area have higher breast cancer mortality rates and one of the highest breast cancer incidence rates in the nation. Early-stage breast cancer has nearly a 100 percent survival rate, yet many women face significant barriers to accessing breast cancer screening services in the region.
The Mammovan and its staff are dedicated to increasing survival rates and breaking down access barriers by providing mammography services to women within their communities, regardless of their ability to pay. The Mammovan provides lifesaving breast cancer screenings to more than 2,500 women each year – women like Ms. Fuentes.
Ms. Fuentes is a mother of two who raises her children, while her husband earns money for the family. Unfortunately, they cannot afford health insurance. As a result of a screening offered at a local community center by the Mammovan, her breast cancer was diagnosed, and she was connected with a Maryland state program that funds treatment of low-income residents. Ms. Fuentes had a lumpectomy and started chemotherapy treatment in April. Her family and faith keep her going as she receives infusion and radiotherapy treatments, and she is deeply grateful for the Mammovan program.
As a sponsor of the GW Blush Lunch, you help ensure that women, like Ms. Fuentes, have access to life-saving breast cancer screenings.
