Over the course of more than 26 years at the George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates (GW MFA), Jack Saraza has worked in several roles and has grown to become a jack-of-all-trades. In his current role as administrative manager for the business office he draws on the skills and knowledge he’s honed during his time at GW MFA, and Saraza’a eager to share those experiences with those in need of a little help.
Q: What do you do in your current role at GW MFA?
Saraza: I am the administrative manager for the business office and that role encompasses so much right now. I am assisting most of the staff in the Arlington office. I work with directors, finance and accounting, information services and technology, our medical records people, the contact center, the managed care group, and with nThrive to ensure they have access to our system. Since COVID-19 started, every day has been as busy day for me. Whatever comes to my plate, I will handle it.
Q: What has your journey at GW MFA looked like over 25 years?
Saraza: In 1994 I was with a temp agency and was assigned to the MFA. I applied for the patient account representative role and got it. I did not know that I would be here so long … [but] I’ve been able to grow so much. Since I started, I’ve also served as a customer service supervisor, credit and collections supervisor, account specialist, executive coordinator, and then now as administrative manager for the business office.
Q: What drives you to do what you do every day?
Saraza: I’m 70 years old and still here. To keep working at this age is amazing. I still don’t know when I will retire. I just love my job, the environment, and my coworkers. I’ve appreciated having good bosses who have helped me train properly for the work I do. I was given the right exposure and was trained the way I should be.
Q: What has made you the most successful?
Saraza: I will help anyone who approaches me, even if it’s not part of my department. I’m happy to do that. My attitude is geared toward being helpful; I won’t say, “That’s not my job.” If I can help with anything or share some knowledge I have, that’s how I am. I also love what I do. You should love your work. Every day is a learning day when you’re working here.
