New Cosmetic Dermatologist, Pooja Sodha, MD, Takes GW to the Cutting Edge

Dermatology

Dr. Pooja Sodha

Dermatology patients at The GW Medical Faculty Associates (GW MFA) now have access to cutting-edge laser treatment with the addition of Pooja Sodha, MD, FAAD.

Sodha, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist, joined GW MFA in August 2020 to serve as the director of the Center for Laser and Cosmetic Dermatology. Sodha is an expert in laser treatments for a variety of skin conditions including photo-aging (red/brown spots), rosacea, acne, birthmarks, traumatic/surgical scarring, pigmentation changes, volume loss, wrinkles, and skin laxity.

Q: Why did you choose to practice cosmetic dermatology?

Sodha: As a student, I loved the “visual learning” experience and translating what the eye sees into words that have a scientific meaning. I was inspired by my teachers and mentors who so adeptly could appreciate subtle changes in color, texture, and shape to monitor skin conditions. In the time we spend with patients, the dermatologist combines this visual acuity with curiosity, empathy, cultural competence, and respect to help our patients. Cosmetic and laser dermatology takes the art and science of dermatology in a new direction, where we combine laser physics and material sciences to help our patients look how they feel. The engineer in me derives great pleasure in sharing these advances with our patients. My goal is to offer the comprehensive approach: addressing the underlying health concern, treating the cosmetic question, and providing the maintenance skin care regimen. We are here to guide our patients toward their goals in skin health.

Q: For common skin problems, are there any topical “home-remedies?” When should patients see a dermatologist?

Sodha: I recommend first speaking to a dermatologist prior to pursuing “home remedies.” If during our appointment a simple solution makes sense, then that is what we will do. The first lesson in cosmetic dermatology is less is more. At home, you can never go wrong with the tried and true — gentle cleansers, daily sunscreen (at least SPF 30), nightly retinol (as long as your skin can tolerate it), and a hydrating moisturizer (bonus if it gives a little more than just soothing care).

Q: Discuss the treatment/surgery options for many conditions. Are they minimally invasive, quick-recovery procedures?

Sodha: Cosmetic dermatology offers two principal branches of care: energy-based devices and injectable treatments. These are used independently or in combination to achieve the patient’s goal. Generally, these procedures are minimally invasive and involve 0-7 days of recovery. Often, a few treatments are needed to achieve that final result, but it is this “slow and steady” approach that allows patients to continue with their daily activities without too much downtime. Our goal is to work with patients to understand how much time they can give us and then to craft a treatment plan that makes sense for their life.
