Allen Dyer, MD is a graduate of Brown University and did his MD and PhD (religion/biomedical ethics) at Duke University, where he did residency and chief residency in psychiatry, psychoanalytic training and served on the faculty in the departments of Psychiatry and in Community and Family Medicine.  

Much of his work involves global health and mental health.  Since 2001 he has been working with Iraqi health professionals and the Minister of Health to develop education programs and policy, and he has worked in disaster affected communities in China, Haiti, Japan, Greece and elsewhere.

He joined the GW Medical Faculty Associates in 2012. Previously he was a professor at East Tennessee State University, where he served as chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.  Prior to that he was at Albany Medical College, where he served as interim chair of the psychiatry department, Psychiatrist-in-chief at the Albany Medical Center Hospital, Chief Medical Officer of the Capital District Psychiatric Center, and Professor of Health Policy and Management at the State University of New York.  He is the author of several books including Ethics and Psychiatry: Toward Professional Definition and One More Mountain to Climb:  What My Illness Taught me about Health, and he served on the editorial board of the Encyclopedia of Bioethics.  

He is the recipient of many fellowships and awards including the Kent Fellowship of the Danforth Foundation, the Institute of Human Values in Medicine Fellowship, the Kellogg National Fellowship, the Nancy Roeske Award for Excellence in Medical Student Education, and the Dean’s Distinguished Teaching Award.  He is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society and Sigma Xi, scientific honor society.

Most recently, Dr. Dyer has been selected by the American Psychiatric Association as recipient of its 2017 Bruno Lima Award in Disaster Psychiatry. The APA Bruno Lima award is given each year to honor the contributions of an APA member who has made exemplary contributions to the care and understanding of the victims of disaster. Most recently, Dr. Dyer organized two humanitarian relief teams that responded to different phases of the refugee crisis in Greece, both including GW psychiatry residents as team members.
