Daniel Karel, DO, is a primary care provider and clinical instructor in medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine with the George Washington University (GW) Medical Faculty Associates and the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS).

He obtained his undergraduate degree in biology at Boston University, where he also had a minor in environmental analysis and policy. After obtaining his undergraduate degree, he went on to work in basic science research at the Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT and Harvard, studying the virology and immunology of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. He went on to earn his medical degree (doctor of osteopathic medicine) at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in New York City. He made the move to the nation’s capital to complete his residency training in internal medicine here at GW.

Dr. Karel seeks not just to treat disease, but to help his patients find wellness in their lives. He has a particular interest in treating patients with substance use disorders. He is also passionate about medical education and quality improvement and will be enrolled in the Master Teacher Leadership Development Program at the GW School of Education and Human Development this academic year. He joins the GW SMHS as a fellow in medical education.
