Dr. Denise Thigpen joined the GWU Medical Faculty Associates in the fall of 2017, as Assistant Professor of Radiology, specializing in Breast Imaging and Intervention. Previously, she was a Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy, and served as the Director of the Breast Imaging Center at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD.
She was raised in Austin, TX, and she earned her undergraduate degree in Bioengineering at Rice University (Houston, TX) with a concentration in Cellular and Molecular Engineering. She attended the University of Texas Health Science Center (San Antonio, TX) to earn her medical degree, and was subsequently selected to Internship and Radiology Residency at the National Capital Consortium (DC/MD). She served at Walter Reed as a general radiologist and Ultrasound Division Officer before being selected for advanced subspecialty Breast Imaging and Intervention fellowship training at George Washington University.
She returned to the Navy to serve as Assistant Professor of Radiology for the Uniformed Services University and as Director of the Breast Imaging Center, earning numerous accolades, notably the Joint Services Commendation Medal and Navy Radiology Team of the Year.
After finishing her military service in the Navy, she returned to the George Washington University Breast Center, where she is actively involved in medical education, with a special interest in supporting women in radiology. She is a mother of three young children.
Dr. Thigpen is devoted to early detection and advanced treatment of breast cancer. She fosters a team approach and individualized breast cancer screening to ensure the most advanced medical care for her patients.
