Biography

Diala El-Maouche, MD, MS, is the Division Director and an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology at the GW School of Medicine & Health Sciences.

Dr. El-Maouche holds a Master of Science in Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics from the University of Rhode Island. She obtained her M.D. degree from University of Balamand in Beirut, Lebanon, and subsequently completed post-graduate training in internal medicine at the University of Maryland's Union Memorial Hospital. She attended the Johns Hopkins Division of Endocrinology for research post-doctoral training, and completed her fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at the National Institutes of Health Inter-Institute Endocrinology program. She is board certified in Internal Medicine, and Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, and is a certified clinical densitometrist.

Prior to joining GW, Dr. El-Maouche had academic and research positions, including faculty at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health Endocrinology Training Program, and Medical Officer at the FDA's Division of Endocrinology, Office of New Drugs.

Dr. El-Maouche's areas of expertise include bone and mineral disorders (primary interest) including osteoporosis, rare bone disease including hypophosphasia, and parathyroid disorders, as well as adrenal and androgen disorders.

She is the recipient of Endocrine' society's 2013 Scholars Award for Excellence in Research and Grant funding, and a number of societal and academic research awards. She is also the recipient of 2021 and 2022 Washingtonian Top Doctor Awards.

Dr. El-Maouche was the principle or associate investigator of tens of studies at the NIH as well as with industry. She has co-authored over 45 peer-reviewed publications (including high-impact journals like the Lancet), abstracts, book chapters, and has presented at national and international endocrine conferences.

She is an active member of the Endocrine Society and the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research, serving as an abstract reviewer and chairing bone sessions at annual conferences.
