Biography

Francis O’Connell, MD is board certified in Emergency Medicine and is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Dr. O’Connell also served in the United States Coast Guard for 11 years prior to attending medical school. While serving in the Coast Guard he received multiple commendation and achievement awards.

He is particularly interested in maritime medicine and is active in the Innovative Practice & Telemedicine Section in the Department of Emergency Medicine where he applies his Coast Guard experience to his practice by utilizing telemedicine to provide medical support to ships at sea.

Dr. O’Connell is actively involved in resident and medical student education and mentors medical students through a medical student apprenticeship program and professional development program. In addition, he regularly teaches at the university simulation center, provides hands-on clinical experiences to students, and lectures.
