Biography

Dr. Robert C. Dean is a Professor of Urology at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences. He is a graduate (Class of 1985) of the University of Rochester, N.Y. with a Bachelor of Science degree in Cell Biology. After receiving his M.D. degree from Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD in 1989, he went on to complete his internship at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, HI. Following several assignments and deployments in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Germany, Texas, and New Mexico as a General Medical Officer he returned to academic training.

Dr. Dean graduated from his Urology Residency from Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC in 2000. After a tour with the 28th Combat Support Hospital in Iraq in 2003-2004 he returned to Washington, DC. Then he gained further urology training with the completion of his fellowship in Andrology (Male Sexual Health and Infertility) at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center in 2005. He returned to Walter Reed and he was made Director of Andrology. In 2006, he was selected to be the Program Director of the Urology Residency Program. He was instrumental in the planning for the merge of the Urology Services at the new Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda in 2011.

After 34 years of active duty service, Dr. Dean retired from US Army as a Colonel in 2019 with numerous citations and awards for leadership, education, and advancements in combat warrior care. He has received Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medical (4OLC), Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal (2OLC), Meritorious Unit Award, Army Superior Unit Award (2) and several campaign awards. Dr. Dean was awarded the General Claire L. Chennault Award in 2019 as the most outstanding teaching faculty at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

He has performed countless microsurgical operations for infertility patients. He was very active with prostate cancer patients' survivorship issues in regard to sexual health and fertility. He has developed unique surgical techniques for sperm harvest. Also, Dr. Dean has cared for hundreds of wounded warriors and he has published on the wound care and testosterone replacement care for these combat warriors.

Dr. Dean is a member of the American Urological Association (AUA), the Mid Atlantic section of the AUA, Sexual Medicine Society of the North America, Society for the Study of Male Reproduction, Society of Urologic Prosthetics Surgeons, and he is a board member for the Society of the Government Service Urologists. He received his Board Certification in Urology in 2002. Dr. Dean has written over 50 medical publications, abstracts and chapters. He has given numerous lectures and medical talks both nationally and internationally. Also, Dr. Dean is an active speaker for the USToo (prostate cancer survivorship) group.

His interests include treatments for erectile dysfunction, medical management for erectile preservation, peyronie's disease, testosterone replacement care, and male infertility. His present research projects include ultrasound use for peyronie's patients, genitourinary wound care, and neurovascular preservation for erectile function.
