Services We Offer & Conditions We Treat:

  • Preoperative evaluations
  • Co-management of chronic diseases
  • Management of acute medical complications

The Division of Hospital Medicine provides comprehensive medical care to patients admitted to the George Washington University Hospital. Our physicians provide high quality care to acutely ill patients with complex medical problems including complications of diabetes, HIV related diseases, and multiple organ system disorders.

Medical consultations are also staffed by the hospitalists seven days a week. Preoperative evaluations, co-management of chronic diseases, and management of acute medical complications are included in this service.

Research & Education

The hospitalists are primary educators of Internal Medicine residents and medical students. In addition to daily supervision of residents on the medical wards, our physicians conduct didactic teaching rounds and give frequent lectures to residents and students.

Areas of research interest are twofold. Public health interests include medically underserved populations, access to healthcare, and health literacy issues. Clinical interests include medical error, quality improvement within the hospital, and resource utilization.

The Division of Hospital Medicine was established not only to provide excellence in inpatient care but to give dedicated inpatient teaching to the house staff and students. The daily interactions between the hospitalists and the inpatient teams allow for both improved teaching and evaluation for students and the house staff.

The hospitalists are establishing an inpatient consultation service for the surgical sub-specialties. This will allow patients on other services to receive rapid medical clearance and avoid delays in surgical scheduling.
